FOTOTREFF #40 – War at a Distance

FOTOTREFF #40, titled War at a Distance, focuses on images of war: their production, mediation and reception. Our perception of wars and conflicts is usually shaped not by our own experience, but from a distance, through reporting on them. Photographs are an important part of this. Since the Russian attack on Ukraine, we have been seeing images of this war daily in the media. FOTOTREFF #40 consists of two talks at Sankt Studio, Kreuzberg, and an exhibition at Salon am Moritzplatz.

In the first part of the evening, we will talk about the challenges that photographers, the media and we as viewers face when it comes to images of war and conflict. In our panel discussion, Ukrainian photographer Julia Kochetova and OSTKREUZ-photographer Sebastian Wells (Soлomiya Magazine) will provide insights into their work. The discussion will be moderated by Tobias Laukemper, independent photo editor, curator and lecturer.

In the second part of the evening, curator, writer and educator Natasha Christia from Barcelona will present her book exhibition project War at a Distance in conversation with photographer Alfonso Moral (ANTI-books): A compilation of publications characterized by a reflexive attitude towards war and the media, far from the classic reporting.
